Kerry Pieri
At Home With is an interview series from Salam Hello where we follow some of our favorite pieces into the homes of your favorite style icons, curators, and creators. Each interview explores what home means and the pieces, people, and practices that bring it all together.
Kerry Pieri is an artist, brand consultant, author, and former digital fashion and features director at Harper’s BAZAAR, living a life devoted to beauty and creativity. Four years ago, she traded New York City for a stunning 1890s Victorian house in Buffalo, New York, where she resides with her husband and daughter.
Our spaces are so personal — What does home look and feel like to you?
Home to me has a peace to it. I like it to be filled with things I find beautiful. We’re at our best when there is zero clutter. Home is family and warmth and ease.
What are some of the places, cultures, aesthetics, art forms, or traditions that have inspired your sense of interior style?
I am a huge lover of classic art museums, particularly the Musée Rodin in Paris, so there is an element of that old world traditional beauty that really appeals to me. This includes oil paintings of seascapes and landscapes. I also paint Greco-Roman sculptures that I put in antique gilded frames. In contrast, I also love the work of Italian architects like Mario Bellini and Vico Magistretti, as well as designers like Giacometti and Charlotte Perriand. So I basically fuse all of these ideas together in rooms that ideally feel seamless and not overwrought.
Whether it's a signature color, a certain style of art, or a collection, as your space has come together, have you noticed any fun themes?
The home we own is a Victorian from the 1890s. I have also always loved 1970s Italian design. I’ve recently discovered that I basically meld traditional elements with this ‘70s Italian vibe in every room in my home, which I did completely subconsciously. There are amazing estate sales where I live, so I’ve been able to collect some very cool vintage dressers, oil paintings, and end tables from the turn of the last century, which somehow work really well in the same room as my Murano glass lamps and Cab chairs.
How has your sense of style at home evolved over the years?
Before owning this home I lived in New York City apartments that were never very big! I definitely learned how to utilize space well over the years. Especially when I was in Manhattan, I gravitated toward a bit more modern design, whereas I love to integrate some traditional elements now. But I’ve also been seriously into collecting vintage and antique items for most of my life (I asked for a marble floor lamp from the 1800s for my 13th birthday, so I guess the traditional elements have come full circle). I collected one of the Bellini Cab chairs I have now about 12 years ago, and I purchased the Murano glass lamps in my bedroom about 8 or 9 years ago, so while I may style them differently, the idea of purchasing lasting, quality items you love holds true for me.
What is the feeling that you want your home to evoke?
Ease and elegance.
What is one thing in your home that you recommend to everyone?
Creating little spaces that feel special and personal to you. I have a little art nook where I paint and a desk where I write; my husband has a space for his spiritual altar, and my daughter has all of her art supplies, dress up clothes and toys and games easily accessible in one area, so all of our creative outlets are within arm’s reach.
