This rug was handwoven by the artisans of Aït Tigga.

Aït Tigga, located about 29km east of Anzal, shares deep family ties with the women of Anzal’s weaving association. Until 2021, Aït Tigga could only be accessed via an off-road route. Due to this isolation, artisans often relied on the women of Anzal to sell their finished rugs.

This piece beautifully blends two distinct techniques.

The Zanafi weaving style, originating from the High Atlas Mountains, stands out for its reversible nature. Symbols appear inverted on the opposite side, highlighting the intricate craftsmanship involved.

The dual cobalt squares, crafted using a low hand-knot technique, add a modern dimensional texture, creating a stunning contrast that merges tradition with contemporary design.

Aït Tigga

Aït Tigga is a Village located about 30 kilometers east of the Village Anzal. Up until a year ago, Aït Tigga was only accessible via an off-road route, so the artisans of the Village would send their rugs to the women of Anzal to sell on their behalf. Thanks to a new road, the artisans of Aït Tigga are now able to sell independently. This collective of 12 artisans weave a variety of rug styles, but their specialty is called Kharita ("map" in Arabic). This complex weaving technique consists of a labyrinthine of geometric shapes and has the same design on both sides, making the rugs reversible.
