This vintage rug is over 20 years old and comes from Kerbia, the leader of the Timnay Association.

Originally from Tiouine, a village located 20 km southeast of Ouarzazate, she now lives in Taznakht with her husband and three children.

Made of 100% wool from the local sheep of the village, Kebira carded, brushed and spun the wool by hand. She then used local plants, spices and herbs to dye the wool.

The outer border is thought protection from evil while the middle symbol represents a razor which is a symbol of respect in the Amazigh culture.

You will find some light fraying on either end, that said, with proper care this rug will endure for decades to come.

Timnay Association

The Timnay Association is located in the N'kob Village on the foothills of the Siroua mountain range. The majority of artisans belong to the Ait Ouaghrda Tribe. The Association was founded in the 1980s. Today, it has 15 artisans working in the collective, which is run by Kebira. They produce a wide variety of weaves, from low hand-knot to intricate hanbels.

Our Vintage pieces were usually made by grandmas or great aunts and then passed down through generations. Even when a family runs out of room or decides to sell an old rug, they’re bound to bring beauty to their next home.

Most vintage rugs you will find in local Moroccan markets are purchased by male brokers, who visit neighboring villages and buy up all the pieces they can in one transaction.

Our process is different, as we work directly with the women selling these heirloom rug pieces. We visit their homes and neighborhoods to see the pieces in-person and negotiate face-to-face.

One telltale way to spot vintage rugs is by their odd shapes, as they may have been made to fit into old buildings, or specific spaces generations ago.
